about

Palimpsest - manuscript in roll or codex form carrying a text erased, or partly erased, underneath an apparent additional text. The underlying text is said to be 'in palimpsest' and, even though parchment or other surface is much abraded, the older text is recoverable in the laboratory by such means as the use of ultraviolet light. The motive for making the palimpsests usually seems to have been economic - reusing parchment was cheaper than preparing a new skin. Another motive may have been directed by Christian piety, as in the conversion of a pagan Greek manuscript to receive the text of a Father of the Church.

Because ancient writing materials were expensive, they were often reused. Papyrus presented difficulties, for ink soon bonded itself firmly into the surface. Parchment could be more readily reused because it is tougher and can be washed or scraped clean. Many medieval monks, when short of writing materials, took ancient books to pieces, cleaned off the leaves and used them again. The original script can often be brought out under ultraviolet light. Parchments thus cleaned and freshly inscribed are called palimpsests (Greek palin, "again"; psēstós, "scraped").

Pete Swinton has used the concept of palimpsests as a musical metaphor, with each track being a complex layering and over layering of different musical instruments.
